Telegraph Cove, Vancouver Island, BC

Friday, August 30, today was a moving day, it was still raining, we had driven north for about 3 hours, only 35 miles to the end of the road on the island. They told us to stop in the town of Sayward to make your lunch, we could hear other people talking about how tight it was getting around, so we just pasted on that stop. We had stopped at a rest area, quick ate some cheese and then continued on our way. We had arrived around 1 pm, got parked and then by 4 pm we had social hour and a driver's meeting about the next two days activities. The theme for the day is "live on the wild side" dress code, some had dressed up others not. At 6 pm we had a spaghetti dinner, with rolls, salad, and dessert of tuxedo cake, really good. Some of the group had then told some stories and tales, funny.

Before dark, a beautifully full rainbow had appeared.

Saturday, August 31, some of the guys left at 7 am to go salmon and halibut fishing. We had driven into Port McNeill, about 10 miles away, but didn't see much too foggy and then back to camp. The fisherman came back at noon, the one boat caught 4 salmon and the other boat didn't caught anything. At 1:30, we left for a boat ride to Alert Bay, some went this morning and the rest are going this afternoon. We had First Nation people give us a guided tour of totem poles at a cemetery, wood carving studio, U'mista Cultural Center, and a longhouse, where we had played a stick game, good fun, and then saw the world's tallest totem pole.

The fishermen that went this afternoon did come back with halibut, better luck than this morning.

Sunday, September 1, we left the trailer and went into Telegraph Cove, what a quaint little place. We had reservations for Stubbs Island Whale Watching, which was the first whale watching company in British Columbia to institute killer whale watching tours. Not long after we left the cove we saw killer whales, small and large ones, we had watched them for about an hour or so and then headed out a little farther. We had seen Dall's porpoises, minke whales, harbour seals and Steller sea lions, bald eagles and all kinds of birds, what a great ride and lots of information.

After our whale watch, we walked into the Whale Interpretive Center, with a whole whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling.

The group got together for dinner at the Old Saltery Pub, I had smoked salmon with different salads, great flavors, Ken had beef which was tough not as good as mine.
