Travels to Calgary, Alberta, Canada

After we left Huron, July 2, we drove north to Medora, North Dakota and camped in Teddy Roosevelt National Park, only $5 a night with senior pass. We decided to stop here to go to the Pitchfork dinner and show, which we both thought was good, this is our second time visiting this location, once in 2006, on our first caravan and now as we traveled through the area.

We decided to travel off the main highways and run on a two lane road, Route 2, through the towns to see the areas. Our third stop, we stopped in Havre, Montana, which was July 4th, stayed in WalMart parking lot, with fireworks going off until at least 1am and then a storm came through with pea size hail, strong wind and rain, about 3am, not a very restful night. Scenery was nice though.

In the town of Chester, Mt., we stopped at a town park, sat and talked to a guy riding bike from Washington state to Wisconsin. Ken had asked him how far he expected to get that day because his cords where showing on his rear tire. He had to call his wife which was at a hotel about 40 miles behind him, he had a spare tire in his car that his wife would follow behind him, which they met up each night. While there, a man came over and talked to all of us, a Hutterite, we talked a bit and then he asked for money, cause he had a family member in the hospital there, he had left the colony to stay at the hospital until Monday, when they leave the colony they are on their own, with no money, food or nothing, and he and his sister where hungry. We gave his some food but no money, the bike rider gave him a power bar, also.

We continued our way into Canada, stopped in a small town, exchanged money and did laundry before heading north. We had arrived in Calgary on Saturday and stayed with some friends, fellow airstreamers, for two nights, parked along the street, with rain and hail again. We really had a great time, they showed us around town, we saw the destruction from a 100 year flood, from about 1-1 1/2 weeks ago. This morning before leaving, we went to a free stampede breakfast, which they have 100's of locations throughout the city, all free, some feeding as many as 20,000 plus, every day during the stampede, which runs about 10 days. We then went off to Cochrane for the beginning of the caravan. I will begin posting more regular during the caravan at the end of each stop, when we have Internet.
