July 17, We left camp this morning heading for Anchorage, our refrigerator still isn’t working correctly, which took about two hours, so we went to Karen’s RV north part of town, got the part and looked for a laundromat, found one, did laundry, found a gas station, fueled up and left the town behind us. Then headed back toward camp, stopping in Girdwood, the Alyeska Highway, they say you can take a tram up to the top of the mountain and have lunch, but the tram wasn’t running. We saw the ski lift and the famous Hotel Alyeska, which features 300 rooms, The Spa of Alyeska, dining, shops and a saltwater pool. Girdwood was originally named Glacier City, with spectacular mountain and glacier views and was founded as a gold mining town at the turn of the century, we had driven back to the Crow Creek Mine, but decided not to pay to tour it, too expensive. During the 1964, Good Friday, earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2 dropped the coastal edges along the Turnagain Arm 8-10 feet, consequently the townsite of Girdwood moved 2 1/2 miles up the valley to the present location. Returned back to camp, Ken installed the part and it seems to be working fine, we’ll see in the morning, ate dinner and just relaxed for the evening. We had a high of 72* today and woke up this morning at 56*.
