Kenai, Alaska

July 13,  Traveled back to Soldotna, washed trailer in carwash, decided to drive to Kenai to the WalMart for the night, didn’t know if you could stay, lots of other trailers here.  We unhooked and went for a drive up the Kenai Spur road, stopped at the Visitors Center and Cultural Center, they had a market set up, we walked around and then into the visitor center.  Watched a movie about Alaska, walked around the cultural center and then left.  Continued up the spur road for about 40 miles, saw the oil companies that have rigs out in the ocean and a refinery company.  We drove to the end to see the ocean and here the road was closed, redoing the road, so we just turned around and came back to the trailer.

July 14,  Woke up to it raining, this is the first we had rain for a while, at least it should help with the forest fires.  Ate lunch and then went for a drive, drove down to the bridge access, drove into the boat launch and saw a lot of boats out in the water, where they are dip-netting, which is a big net that they use to catch the salmon.  Drove down to the bird sanctuary, didn’t see birds except seagulls and lots of tracks from moose.  We then drove back into town and drove out to the scenic cliff overlook, very interesting, could see the ships anchored in the Kenai River before it goes into the Cook Inlet.  Then onto Leif Hansen Park, Boy Scout park, and saw a lot of people dip-netting on the beach, we got talking to people from here and they said there wasn’t that many people down there, the salmon apparently haven’t shown up here yet.  We then drove down into the old part of town, which isn’t very big, just a few houses, just saw two old churches.  Back to trailer and saw other trailers pulling in for the night or a few days, some here longer than we are.
